We do not ask you to take our word. Here is every passage the code leans on. Go and read them.

How we cite

Scripture is quoted word for word from the King James Version.

The Stoics wrote in Greek and Latin. We quote them word for word from old translations that anyone may read and copy: George Long, W. A. Oldfather, Richard Gummere, Aubrey Stewart, John Basore and R. D. Hicks. Each page names the translator. Section numbers can shift by one between editions.

On solitude

A man can be himself only so long as he is alone; and if he does not love solitude, he will not love freedom; for it is only when he is alone that he is really free.

Arthur Schopenhauer, Counsels and Maxims, chapter 2, section 9. Translated by T. Bailey Saunders.
