The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Maxim 16 of 23

The man makes his own destiny, his own code, and his own example

You are already an example to someone. The only question is what you are teaching them.

A man who owns his destiny does not wait for an example to follow. He becomes one. He lives by his own code, his own standard, his own line — visibly enough that the men watching can read it without a word of explanation.

Every man is being watched by someone — a son, a younger brother, a friend who is quietly deciding whether the right way is even possible. You do not get to opt out of being an example. You only get to choose whether you are a good one. The man who has taken ownership of his own becoming stops asking "who will show me how" and starts living an answer. He knows his life is being read like a text, so he makes it worth copying. Not loud. Not preachy. Just consistent enough that it teaches on its own.

The Stoic source

Epictetus, Enchiridion 51
Immediately then think it right to live as a full-grown man, and one who is making proficiency, and let everything which appears to you to be the best be to you a law which must not be transgressed.

Translated by George Long

The Scripture

1 Timothy 4:12, KJV
Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.

The move

Write the one core principle you want to pass down — the code you actually live. Then do one concrete thing today that proves you mean it.
