The Man Makes

Sigma, defined

The word has been worn as a costume. We use it as a measure.

The sigma mark

Sigma is the eighteenth letter of the Greek alphabet. In mathematics it means the sum. Add up every term and you have the answer.

A man is a sum too. Not of what he says or wants. Of what he makes. His laws, his bonds, his choices, his word. Add them up and you have the man.

The warrior and the sage

There are two old pictures of a strong man. The lone warrior acts. He faces the thing head on and does not wait for the crowd. The sage thinks. He looks long, asks why, and is hard to fool.

Most men pick one. The warrior without the sage is a hammer with no hand. The sage without the warrior is a library with the doors locked.

What we call sigma is both in one man. He can stand alone and he can sit still. He acts with the warrior's nerve and the sage's sight.

What it is not

It is not a rank. There is no ladder here and no one below you on it.

It is not a pose. If it needs an audience it is something else.

It is not a reason to be alone. Solitude is where the man is built. Brotherhood is where he is used.
