The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Trait 18 of 24

Unimpressed by rank

How a man treats those who can do nothing for him is the whole man.

A sovereign man respects the position and sees through the person wearing it. He has learned that an impressive title often sits on a small character, and that the badge is not the man.

This is not disrespect. He gives every office its due. But he does not confuse the office with the soul inside it, and he does not perform a different self for the powerful than he does for the powerless. The rank-obsessed man is easy to spot: he is warm to whoever can help him and cool to whoever cannot, and everyone beneath him notices. The man genuinely indifferent to status treats the intern and the chief executive with the same steady regard — and both remember him, because both felt, maybe rarely, fully seen.

The Stoic source

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 6.30
Take care that thou art not made into a Caesar, that thou art not dyed with this dye; for such things happen. Keep thyself then simple, good, pure, serious, free from affectation, a friend of justice, a worshipper of the gods, kind, affectionate, strenuous in all proper acts.

Translated by George Long

The Scripture

James 2:1, KJV
My brethren, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

The move

Give your full attention to the person in the room with the least power. Learn their name. Make the handshake real. Notice how few people do.
