Keep your word to yourself when no one is watching. That is where self-respect is actually built.
Self-respect is not arrogance. It is the floor a man refuses to drop below. He keeps the promises he makes to himself the way he would keep them to another man — and he repairs himself on purpose, because a tool that is not sharpened rusts.
Most men keep their word to others and break it constantly with themselves. The workout skipped, the page unwritten, the standard quietly lowered when no one was watching. Each small betrayal seems harmless. Together they teach a man that his own word means nothing — and a man who does not trust his own word cannot respect himself, no matter how others treat him. Self-respect is built in private, in the kept promise no one will ever see. And self-improvement is not vanity; it is maintenance. Stagnation is not rest. Stagnation is rust with better marketing.

The move
Take one promise to yourself you usually break — the workout, the page, the early rise. Keep it all seven days. Treat your own word as law.
