The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Maxim 13 of 23

The man makes truthfulness the foundation for genuine relationships

A pleasant lie buys you today and mortgages every tomorrow.

You cannot build anything real on a lie. Truth is the foundation; everything else is the house. Lie to a man once about something that matters, and every word after carries an asterisk.

This is why truthfulness comes before warmth, before charm, before being liked. A pleasant lie buys you an easy afternoon and a cracked foundation. The relationships that last are the ones where both men can say the hard, true thing and survive it. The ones built on flattery look fine until the first real test, and then they split exactly along the seam where the truth should have been. Tell the truth, especially when it is costly. It is the only ground that holds weight.

The Stoic source

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 9.1
He then who lies intentionally is guilty of impiety, inasmuch as he acts unjustly by deceiving; and he also who lies unintentionally, inasmuch as he is at variance with the universal nature, and inasmuch as he disturbs the order by fighting against the nature of the world.

Translated by George Long

The Scripture

Ephesians 4:25, KJV
Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

The move

Tell one person one true thing you have been softening to keep things smooth. Kindly. Watch the relationship get more real, not less.
