The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Maxim 19 of 23

The man makes honesty and integrity fundamental principles that guide his choices and interactions

Integrity loses every sprint and wins the only race that counts.

Integrity means you are one man, not a committee of convenient selves. The same in the dark as in the light. The same with the client as with the cashier.

It is the most expensive thing a man owns, and the only one he cannot buy back once it is spent. The man of integrity moves slower and often poorer in the short run, because he will not cut the corner the next man cuts. He looks, for a while, like a sucker. Then the day comes when the corner-cutters are all exposed at once — and he is still standing, untouched, because there was simply nothing to find. Integrity is the long game. It loses every sprint and wins the only race that matters.

The Stoic source

Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 11.21
He who has not one and always the same object in life, cannot be one and the same all through his life.

Translated by George Long

The Scripture

Proverbs 10:9, KJV
He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.

The move

Find one corner you have quietly been cutting — a small lie, a fudged number, a secret that should not be kept. Straighten it before anyone forces you to.
