A borrowed opinion is a debt. One day the bill comes due, and you cannot defend a word of it.
A free thinker is not a contrarian. Contrarians are just obedient in reverse — following the crowd backward, still letting it steer.
The free man weighs the claim, not the crowd behind it. He does not ask how many people agree or who is saying it. He asks whether it is true. He can hold an idea in his hand, turn it over, and set it down without swallowing it whole. This is rarer than it sounds, because real free thought costs you belonging. The group offers warmth in exchange for your agreement, and most men take the deal without noticing they made it. The free thinker keeps his judgment and pays for it in comfort.
The Stoic source
Seneca, Letters 33We Stoics are not subjects of a despot: each of us lays claim to his own freedom. ... I shall indeed use the old road, but if I find one that makes a shorter cut and is smoother to travel, I shall open the new road.

The Scripture
Romans 12:2, KJVAnd be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
The move
