A man who is never alone never finds out what he actually thinks.
A man needs hours that belong to no one but himself. Not to flee the world — to think clearly about it. In the quiet, the noise drains off and he can finally hear what he actually believes.
Without solitude, a man becomes an echo of whatever room he was last in. His opinions are the average of his feeds. Give him silence and his real convictions surface, the ones that were drowned out by everyone else's certainty. This is why every serious man in history guarded his alone time like territory. Solitude is not loneliness. Loneliness is the ache of wanting company you cannot reach. Solitude is the wealth of being good company to yourself.
The Stoic source
Seneca, Letters 7I never bring back home the same character that I took abroad with me. Something of that which I have forced to be calm within me is disturbed; some of the foes that I have routed return again.
