The Man Makes

The 47 Virtues / Maxim 7 of 23

The man makes trust and loyalty non-negotiable

A man who gossips to you will gossip about you. Everyone watching already knows it.

Trust is everything, and it is asymmetrical: built slowly, broken instantly, and never quite restored to the same shape. A man's loyalty is not for sale. Betray it for gain and you are left holding the gain — and nothing else.

Loyalty is tested in two unglamorous places: how a man talks about the absent, and what he does with a secret he could profit from. The disloyal man sells out whoever is not in the room, and everyone present quietly files the same note — he will do that to me too. The loyal man defends the absent friend and keeps the confidence even when breaking it would pay. So men hand him their reputations, their secrets, their lives, because they have watched him be the kind of man who does not drop what he is given. Be the wall, not the leak.

The Stoic source

Seneca, Letters 88
Loyalty is the holiest good in the human heart; it is forced into betrayal by no constraint, and it is bribed by no rewards.

Translated by Richard M. Gummere

The Scripture

Proverbs 20:6, KJV
Most men will proclaim every one his own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?

The move

Defend one absent friend when joining the pile-on would be easier. Keep one confidence you could profit from breaking. Be the wall.
